Our custom courses/experiences can be tailored to an individual (down to the age of 11***), couple, or small group with flexibility on what is made or what processes taught. They are also suitable for corporate team building, social get togethers and bonding.

*** We can take younger students, down to 11 years old, but only on condition that if under 16, they must have a parent or close family adult member also booked on the course with them, they must be well-motivated and really want to take the course and must have reasonable stamina. Alternatively, we offer shorter and tailored ‘one on one’ courses, suitable for younger students - with these, an adult does not need to participate, but must be present and can observe throughout. Please contact us to discuss before booking.

  • We could teach you how to make something specific, that we have chosen for the core blacksmithing processes it incorporates.

  • We could work with you or guide you to create something you want to make, need for your home (for example, BBQ tools, garden/flowerbed sculptural items, bird feeder, fire tools, candle holder, shelf brackets, to name a few)

  • We could simply teach you the core blacksmithing processes or if you are already a metalworker - brush up on a particular skill

  • We often do courses for couples, and it make a wonderful gift idea for 6th (iron) or 11th (steel) wedding anniversary. You can work together under the expert guidance of our tutor to create something that lasts forever that you can display in your home or garden.

  • Or quite simply, facilitate you in letting-off some steam and de-stressing by just whacking some red-hot metal!!

We offer this on an hour-by-hour basis, with a minimum booking of 3 hours to ensure that there is enough time to learn, or be able to make something to take away with you.

We can discuss with you in advance what you would like to make and plan accordingly to ensure the item is suitable and can be produced within the timescale.

Our courses make a fantastically unique wedding anniversary gift. 6th wedding anniversary is iron and 11th wedding anniversary is steel! Giving a course can be a great way of linking to one of the metals and you come away with items that can be kept forever or gifted to your partner. Why not come and do a course as a couple for your wedding anniversary? Please feel free to contact is to discuss ideas or personalised experience.

With regards to cost, this depends entirely on the duration (please us our cost calculator above). Our minimum booking duration is 3 hours, and we can go on for several days (or even set up a regular weekly or monthly session to continue on a larger project for example). We would recommend at least 5 hours as a good foundation to be able to properly get stuck in learn some key blacksmithing processes and create item(s) that can be taken home with you. When compared with our larger 8-student courses, where tutors are spread among 8 students, these courses are much more compact and intimate, offering you 100% of the tutor’s dedicated time and attention.

The prices include 1 or 2 tutors (depending on number of participants), steel, fuel for the forges, light refreshments (tea/coffee & biscuits) and the uses of a variety of specialist hand tools and under close supervision - use of certain machinery. You will have your own anvil, leg vice and forge. It also includes the provision of PPE for each student, including brand new safety glasses and leather gloves, with the exception of steel toe cap boots (we ask you to bring your own boots for hygiene reasons. For more information on this, and where to get them a very low cost, please refer to our health and safety information in our website www.blacksmithing-school.co.uk).
